Managers Should Test The Product
When I was working with Piotr (my boss) and Ola (my peer), we came up with the single thing that differentiated good managers from bad ones in our context.
That was manual testing of the product.
Being a successful manager requires knowing the product.
Managers who do not test the product manually are detached from the reality of the individual contributors, so it is harder for ICs to communicate with them without getting frustrated.
The same idea was transferred to me in 2010 when my first boss (Darek), asked me to take the car and drive to our customers' headquarters to see how they used the product. That happened during the first weeks of my IT career. That was stressful for a younger me, but it was valuable.
If you are a team leader, engineering manager, senior engineering manager, or CTO, then you are likely considering whether you should code or not to stay technical.
I do not know if this statement is still relevant to my colleagues I mentioned earlier, but for me this is still relevant - first and foremost, you should do manual testing.
